History of our motocross club

SATRA is an acronym for "Syracuse Area Trail Riders Association".  SATRA was formed in the early 1980's, and was comprised of mainly trail riding enthusiasts.
Over the years, SATRA transitioned into a mostly motocross club, since most of our rides take place at Central New York State motocross tracks.
We do not hold races.  We rent tracks on their off weekends, to allow our riders a more low key type of riding environment.
Members are encouraged to ride at their own pace in a non-competitive environment.  Many of our riders are now over 50 years old.
Our goal is to simply have fun while enjoying the sport we love.

2025 News
UPDATE 10/15/25:  Saturday's ride at the Compound was mixed.  The track was prepped to perfection with jumps and corners being more accessible for non-pros.  There were a lot of non SATRA riders there which made it a little uncomfortable for some of us.  We'll address the issue of shared rides at our meeting and make some changes for next year.  We had a mostly fun day at the USMX Thornwood Motocross race this past Sunday with lots of SATRA club members participating. Allen Graham was the top SATRA finisher in the 60+ class. Unfortunately in moto one Tom Lundy crashed and took a ride to the hospital. Got word that he's bruised and battered with a concussion and will be back soon, but in his words, "not this week". Bill Lampman was disappointed with his moto 1 ride and came out with guns blazing in the 2nd moto. I was behind him watching his pass a number of guys up to 2nd place. He had it in his mind he'd lead a lap but hit a wet spot, stalled the bike, and went into a corner hot and faceplanted. I have no doubt that if he had kept it on 2 wheels he would have been battling for the moto win! Other SATRA guys racing included Jeff Hopkinson, Brian Vanella, Scott Pickard, Ed Roe, and myself. Also Austin Gabrial raced 2 motos and took a 1st and 2nd!  Nice Job Austin! Sorry if I missed anyone. All in all, it was a perfect day for moto. You can't win 'em all.

UPDATE 10/8/25: Our Motomasters ride on Oct. 4th was epic.  We had 40 riders.  The track was in great shape with continuous watering.  The Compound and Thornwood round out our riding season, with the possible addition of another Utica Rome ride in November if weather allows.  Our next meeting is on ZOOM, November 4th at 7PM.  We will nominate officers for the 2026 season, and then vote in December at a live meeting on December 2nd.

UPDATE 10/1/25: We finally got to ride at East Hill and had a great track, although it got a bit rough and dusty near the end.  Overall the track was in great condition and everyone riding had a good time.  Our High Voltage ride was greeted with great weather conditions.   Motomasters is coming up this Saturday with the Compound and Thornwood to follow. We may add a ride at Utica Rome in November if weather cooperates.

UPDATE 9/17/25: Since the last update, we've had rides at Jackson's, Thornwood, and Pavilion.  I missed the Jackson's ride, but our Thornwood ride started a bit wet but got better and better all day.  By the end of the day it was really fun.  Our ride at Pavilion could not have been better.  Perfect conditions on a prepped track had us all riding longer motos than usual.  The track has great flow with lots of safe jumps, elevation changes, and excellent soil.  It was certainly one of our best rides this year according to the feedback I received.  We are hoping to schedule a couple rides there next season.  East Hill looks great for this Saturday the 20th.  If you're traveling to the ride avoid the town of Waterville.  They are having a large community event around noon.   High Voltage is on the 27th.  Note that we will be sharing the track with some of their workers who will be camping and riding along with us.  Motomasters, the Compound, and Thornwood finish up this year's schedule with the possibility of adding a ride or two if weather allows.

UPDATE 8/26/25: After a long dusty day of flagging at the Unadilla National we rode the next Saturday on the prepped, watered pro track.  Thank you to all who helped flag the National as well as our club ride.  We're looking forward to upcoming rides at Jackson's, Thornwood, Pavilion, High Voltage, East Hill, The Compound, and Motomasters in the next few months.  There's still time to join our club to finish out our last 9 rides of the season.  Our non-working membership price is $200.  Contact us by email or the hotline if interested in joining.

UPDATE 8/12/25: Our Thornwood picnic weekend was well attended and fun!  The track was great both days.  Our Unadilla flagging duties are this Saturday.   We'll be riding Unadilla the following week on 8/23.

UPDATE 8/6/25:  Our 8/2 ride at Frozen Ocean was fun and well attended.  The track was groomed, watered, and pretty good despite some flooding issues from broken pipes.  Of course it got dusty by the end of the day, but with the warm sunny weather, that was expected.  Although the nightcross track was unprepped, a few members had a great time riding that track as well.  Our club picnic is at Thornwood MX on 8/9-10.  We'll have a live meeting, flagging training, food and beverages provided by the club Saturday evening, MX Gear giveaways, and camping is available Saturday evening.  Members please bring a dish to pass/dessert/snack/etc.

UPDATE  7/29/25: We had a great ride at Jackson's this past Saturday.  If you've never tried the track out, it's a lot of fun.  The soil is great.  It tends to be a little muddy early but turns awesome before it gets dusty usually later in the afternoon.  If needed, the track owner will water during the day.  Mother Nature decided to do the watering late in the afternoon instead.  This Saturday's ride is at Frozen Ocean.  We've had great conditions the last few rides there and look forward to awesome weather and a great ride.  Our monthly club meeting will be held on ZOOM Monday night the4th at 7PM.  All current members will get a link sent by email.  Coming up soon is the Thornwood weekend picnic and flagging at the Unadilla National.

7/20/25: Our first ride at Utica Rome was really great!  Conditions started off pretty good but the harsh sun and heat dried out he track making it rocky and slick.  Everyone enjoyed the ride on this challenging track with fun safe jumps.  Next was the Compound for another hot one.  The track was prepped deep for pro conditions.  Most of us mere mortals rode gingerly early but as conditions changed got into a flow.  There was a local pro who did all the jumps from the first lap on.  There are different levels to this!  We had a couple incidents including perennial crasher Jim Dempsey cross-rutting on a fast straight and adding yet another concussion to his unending list of injuries...  Odd thing is that 2 of us had flat tires?  Weird for a sand track.   Stay tuned for a possible change for next week's ride.

UPDATE 7/7/25: We had an awesome club ride at Jackson's MX Saturday.  11 club members joined the open practice.  Traffic was never an issue though were was one really fast guy there.   A perfectly prepped track turned a bit dusty late but we all got plenty of riding in.
UPDATE 7/4/25: We've had some amazing rides in the last month!  Our first (of three) rides at Unadilla was amazing.  The track was groomed to perfection, and held up well all day.  We held special ride times for minis, and everyone else got a lot of riding in as well.  Thanks to everyone who flagged! We can't ride unless we provide our own flagging for the day.
Our ride at Motomasters was the best attended ride of the year so far.  I missed it but was told everyone thoroughly enjoyed our first ride at Motomasters in MANY years.
Our 6/28 ride at Unadilla was scrapped because of weather however we have rescheduled it for Wednesday 7/9 from 1PM - 6PM.  See email for important minor release message!
Other upcoming rides include our first ride at Jackson's MX is this Saturday 7/5 and our first ride at Utica Rome on 7/12!

UPDATE 6/9/25: Our High Voltage ride on 6/7 was epic.  The track was in excellent condition early, though it did get pretty rough and dusty later.  We held a short meeting at the track updating members on recent club issues.   Our next ride is scheduled for the Unadilla Rewind track (national track with a few changes) on 6/14.  Anyone riding that day will be required to do an hour of flagging (or have a friend or family member flag) during the ride.  This is a requirement of Unadilla's insurance.  We will also be required to provide separate ride times for youth only (another requirement of the insurance company).   Details will be worked out this week and communicated by email or at the ride.

UPDATE 6/3/25: We had a very informative meeting with lots of discussion about our Unadilla Flagging work duties and other topics.  Next meeting will be held July 7th on ZOOM only.
UPDATE 6/2/25: Our Compound ride on 5/31 turned out wet, cold and muddy.  Scotty allowed us to cancel the ride.  But for the people that showed and wanted to ride, he let us pay for single open practice rate per person.  We had 5 guys try it out.  We're discussing the possibility of a mid week reschedule, which we'll decide at the meeting tonight.

UPDATE 5/28/25: Our rescheduled Thornwood MX ride went off without a hitch Monday with 40 riders attending.  The track started a bit soft, but worked in well with a great opportunity to practice jumping with rutted jump faces!  Overall the conditions were awesome considering the rain we had previous to the ride.  (We took in 10 new membership applications!)  And Melissa Clark was out taking lots of photos.  You'll see them posted on the SATRA Facebook site as soon as I can edit and post them.  Feel free to tag yourself and download pics. Our next ride is at the Compound.  Kevin and I communicated with Scotty Rich (track owner) asking him to "vet" groom shallow for our ride (to prevent those long multiple ruts through every corner and jump face and landing).  He is perfectly willing to do it, however if lots of rain comes, he'll have to groom deep for the water to sink in and we'll get his regular pro-groomed track.  Either way we'll get a challenging track with lots of very forgiving doubles/tabletops/triples.

UPDATE 5/25/25: Our SATRA club ride at Thornwood has been rescheduled for Monday 5/26/25 (Memorial Day) from 11-5.

UPDATE 5/18/25:  We FINALLY got our first ride in at Frozen Ocean Saturday the 17th.  We expected a rain out but got dry dusty conditions instead.  We had a bunch of new members show up (which was awesome).  Our 1PM club meeting was well attended and informative. About 3pm or so a major wind and rain storm kicked up which sent us packing up in haste!

UPDATE 5/9/25 : Our ride for this weekend at East Hill MX has been cancelled due to wet weather with hopes of rescheduling possibly for a mid-week ride sometime soon.   Our first club ride will now be at Frozen Ocean on Saturday May 17th.

UPDATE 5/5/25 : Our ride schedule has been changed for this weekend. The Geer Farm ride is cancelled, to be rescheduled later.  East Hill's ride that was cancelled last week has been rescheduled for this Saturday, 5/10/25 from 11AM to 5PM.

UPDATE 3/25/25 : We held a special meeting on Monday 3/24/25.  We had 16 people attend the ZOOM meeting.  We talked about the Unadilla National flagging details and our rides there.  It looks like we'll have a weekend club ride there on June 28-29th, with possible options for another ride.
Our ride schedule is almost finalized.  We're waiting on a couple tracks to confirm dates and should be able to publish a TENTATIVE schedule by the weekend.  Thanks to Budd Honda for his work in putting that puzzle together!  We presently have 24+ rides at 12 track locations including a couple weekend rides with camping available.

Update 2/26/25 : We're well on our way to updating membership details and 2025 ride schedule.  Our biggest challenge is waiting for details on our Unadilla work/ride plans.  They are facing lots of new challenges this year which are holding up progressing forward.  Things are looking more positive in adding new track locations for our club rides.   For more details and to add your voice, join us March 3rd by ZOOM for our next club meeting.  All 2024 members will get a link by email.  Anyone else interested please message our Facebook page or leave a message on the hotline and we'll send you as link.

As of 1/19/25 we've already had 2 club meetings!  One was a regular club meeting, while the other was an informational meeting with Greg from Unadilla.  We're mainly working on updating the website, paperwork, work requirements, yada yada yada.  Check the NEW gallery tab for club member pics.  PM a picture of yourself and I'll get it on the page!  We hope to have membership applications finalized earlier than in previous years - (thanks Bob Frost).   Our goal is to be ready to go by the first of March.   We are in the process of putting together schedules of all the surrounding MX series so we can map out our own club rides - (thanks Budd Honda).  We're reaching out to a few additional local tracks to see if we can add additional ride locations.  As always, whether you're a current member, or just curious about the club, you are welcome to attend monthly meetings.  The February meeting will be virtual on Zoom Monday the 3rd and welcome to all.  Current members will get an email with the meeting link.  Anyone else interested in attending just PM the Facebook page and I'll get you the link.  We're looking forward to another great SATRA MX Club riding season in 2025!
