History of our motocross club

SATRA is an acronym for "Syracuse Area Trail Riders Association."  SATRA was formed in the early 1980's, and was comprised of mainly trail riding enthusiasts.

Over the years, SATRA transitioned into a mostly motocross club, since most of our rides take place at Central New York State motocross tracks, so our name was changed to SATRA-MX.

We do not hold races.  We rent tracks on their off weekends, to allow our riders a more low key type of riding environment.
Members are encouraged to ride at their own pace in a non-competitive environment.  Most of our riders are now over 50 years old.

Our goal is to simply have fun while safely enjoying the sport we love.

2026 News
UPDATE 7/29/26: Since the last update we had great rides at Pavilion, Frozen Ocean, Unadilla twice, Utica Rome replaced with a Broome Tioga, Motomasters, and a cancelled Jackson's ride which we hope to reschedule.  We'll also look to reschedule Utica Rome as well.  Unfortunately a few members have been placed on the DL for a time.  We wish speedy recoveries!  Our club picnic is coming up this weekend with 2 days of riding, a cook-out, awesome prize givaways, and a live meeting talking about our Unadilla responsibilities, and other club business.  Our regular club meeting will be held online on Tuesday, August 4th.  Broome Tioga is scheduled for the 8th.  We'll flag the Unadilla National on the 15th.  And we'll ride (most of) the Unadilla National track on the 22nd.  Unadilla ride time will be moved up to 10AM to  3PM.   We'll finish out August with another ride at Thornwood.

REMINDER: All working members are required to do a sign-in at a club ride, and flag the Unadilla National MX.  Visit sign-up genius to pick your days to volunteer.

UPDATE 5/29/26: We had a great ride at Thornwood on 5/23. It was our largest ride to date with 57 riders!  The track was prepped perfectly and stayed very rideable even after the rain started in the afternoon.  Our ride at Broome the week before was also well attended.  Damien is working on tweaking some of the track sections and will be investing in rock picking equipment.  Our upcoming ride is at Pavilion MX on Saturday 5/30.  The weather looks good for riding!  Our June meeting will be held on ZOOM Tuesday, June 2nd at 7PM.  All current members will receive a meeting link via email.  Our Groupme app administrator (and club VP) Josh Kowalski is working through some bugs to make it easier to communicate last minute ride updates and meeting reminders.  Contact the club email if you are still not receiving group texts.

UPDATE 5/15/26: We had 11 riders for our Geer farm enduro trail ride.  The 2nd loop was in great condition.  Everyone had fun although there was a tow of shame when one bike died about a mile out from the road.  This Saturday's ride (5/16/26) is at Broome Tioga.  If you haven't heard, Damien Cornwell is the new owner.  He's working with Tommy to bring back some of the old national track obstacles including the camelback jump near the road and the old "dinner" table-top.  We have two of our favorite tracks to fill out the month of May.  Thornwood MX is on the 23rd (remember to put on your "scoop" tire for the sand).  Pavilion rounds out our May rides on the 30th.  If you have not ridden this track, DO IT!  It is super flowy with great soil, elevation, and safe jumps!

5/6/26: Our ride at East Hill on May 2nd was well attended with a number of new club members joining in on the fun.  Conditions started out a little greasy but turned out epic later in the day.  The track was prepped perfectly with jump faces rebuilt.  Jake built a bonfire to keep us warm and toasty between rides.  Check out our Facebook page where ride pictures are posted.  We had our May SATRA MX Club meeting on the 5th.  The monthly newsletter will be sent to current members with details.  A few club members competed in the Geer Farm D4 Sprint Enduro event on May 3rd, which turned out having excellent conditions and a fun flowy course.  Our club ride will take place at Geer Farm on Saturday 5/9, weather permitting.  There are 2 -5 mile trail loops available to ride, however, the field sections will not be available as spring planting is underway.  The rest of the May schedule includes rides at Broome Tioga, Thornwood, and Pavilion.

4/29/26: We had our first two club rides at Motomasters and Utica Rome.  (This is the first year in many that we didn't lose rides because of wet Spring weather conditions).  Motomasters had it's tricky sections, however the track owner resurfaced some of the more challenging areas in the afternoon for us.  The Utica Rome ride time was moved earlier to 10AM to beat the forecasted rain.  The track was in great condition early, and actually held up very well through the early light rain.  Our next ride is 5/2/26 at East Hill from 11-5.  Our next club meeting will be held on ZOOM only on Tuesday 5/5/at 7PM.  All are welcome to attend.

4/7/26: Our April meeting was well attended.  Our membership is growing daily.  Our ride schedule is becoming more finalized.  We will soon be out riding!  Our first rides for April will be Motomasters MX on the 18th, and Utica Rome MX on the 25th, weather permitting.  May's rides include East Hill MX, Geer Farm (Sprint Enduro Course), Broome-Tioga MX, Thornwood MX, and Pavilion MX.  Check out the ride schedule tab for additional details.

UPDATE 3/4/26: We had another large turnout for our March club meeting.  We tested out our new GroupMe app.  We are still figuring it out, and will use it to communicate reminders and last minute updates to club members.  If you DON'T upload the app, you will receive regular text messages.  Id you DO upload it, there is more functionality including being able to respond to messages.  There is an option for any member to opt out at any time.  (Thanks to VP Josh K for taking on this project!). There were a number of other subjects discussed which will be contained on the club newsletter which 2025 members will receive by email.  It was decided to go live with 2026 memberships on March 15th.  Early memberships will lock in our current dues, which may increase at a later date due to rising costs.  The meeting went longer than normal and must have been pretty boring because one member actually fell asleep and started snoring online!  Haha!
